In the beginning we were 12 ordinary government employees going about our daily work and lives. Then the opportunity came up for a team of WorkCover NSW employees to travel to Nepal in 2009 and build for the Habitat for Humanity Global Village Program in a town called Itahari and our lives have taken on a whole new meaning! We call ourselves WorkCover Team Nepal and are - Jon, Annette, Matt, Dot, Scott, Kylie, Sarah, Jason, Julie and Christine, we're from the NSW Central Coast, Dean and John are Sydney-ite!
For the last five months, we have been madly fundraising to help pay for our involvement in the volunteer program. We've organised some great events and will hopefully achieve our fundraising goal. With only 8 weeks to go everyone is getting very excited! We have one more fundraiser to do, a Dinner Dance on Saturday, 21st February and then it's only a matter of weeks before we're off to build homes for children at the Itahari Children's Village, an orphanage for children 2-16 years old ... and we can't wait.
For me personally, while I've achieved some great things in my life, I think this experience will be one of the highlights of my life. Visiting Nepal has been a childhood dream of mine, so to be part of the Habitat for Humanity team in that country is both a thrill and a privilege.
Hopefully, via this blog, each member of WorkCover Team Nepal can share his or her volunteering adventure with you all, through story and picture. We hope you enjoy our journey as much as we hope to.
